Hello IHP viewers!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my camp attendees and the Marple Sports Arena for making the 1st annual IHP Marple Sports Arena Christmas clinic a success. Before the camp started, I wasn’t too sure how these young players were going to do with some of the more challenging off rink and on rink training. When we first started our off rink training warm up, one of the first things I told the players was, ”These are going to be challenging movements. I don’t expect you to do them perfectly right away; but, I expect you to try 100% each time.” Throughout the 3 day camp, the group truly impressed me and was able to improve and master these movements. I am proud of each one of these players for that and I know that if their work ethic continues, they can continue to have fun and play at as high a level as they want to.
Each day, we started off with what I began to call the “In shoes portion” (no longer called “Off Rink” because we were literally doing the exercises on the rink), which was designed to improve the young players body control, explosiveness, first step speed, and endurance. The drills consisted of the dynamic warm up, linear and lateral sprinting, change of direction training, low intensity plyometric training drills (which is basically a fancy word for jump training and teaching the body how to move explosively), body weight strength training, core training, and endurance training. Basically, we would do a drill that would address an objective we wanted to achieve (ie: body control, etc.) and then play a game that practiced that drill in a fun and engaging manner. The players’ competiveness really made the relay races a lot of fun – and not just for the players!
After the In shoes portion, we would take a 15 minute break and go to the In skates portion. Each day was based around a different skill: Day 1 was power skating and expanding your comfort zone, Day 2 was filming and stick skills (basic stick handling, passing, and shooting), and Day 3 was special skills and player video analysis (puck protection, defensive and offensive 1 on 1s, and making decisions while skating with the puck). Each player really demonstrated their understanding of when to use these skills in games and that he or she could do it consistently.
I know that the players learned a lot and, I also learned a lot from them. I wish all of the players the best of luck in their future hockey careers. Continue to work hard and train hard.
Stay tuned for upcoming holiday camps!
